CASE STUDY

Astronomy Discovery Center

Client Lowell Observatory
Location Flagstaff, AZ
Date Completed November 2024

Overview

Lowell Observatory conducts research on astronomical phenomena, with a focus on our solar system and its evolution. Trivium developed 17 exhibits and interactive multimedia experiences for the observatory’s visitor center, all designed to support its mission of public education and outreach.

Visitors can explore a 3D game to trace the journey of their atoms through time, or select tools to launch their own mission to Saturn’s moon, Titan, gathering data and samples in the search for potential signs of life. They can also compare images captured across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and make their own estimates on the likelihood of other communicating civilizations, using an equation scientists have relied on since the 1960s. Whether visitors touch a screen, turn a dial, or roll a ball, they’ll enjoy an immersive learning experience that brings our vast universe closer and makes it more accessible than ever.

Challenges

This project required developing media exhibits that presented astronomy content in ways that were accessible, engaging, and understandable to general audiences, while also maintaining the scientific accuracy and depth to satisfy the scientists dedicated to that content. Another challenge was designing interactive media graphics and user interfaces that complemented the playful and unique environmental design of the exhibit. Additionally, select exhibits needed to be built with long-term flexibility in mind, allowing content to be updated or modified over time by the observatory’s staff.

DELIVERABLES
