CASE STUDY

Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center

Client Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center
Location Clear Lake, Iowa
Date Completed September 2025

Overview

Not Fade Away is a fully immersive, interactive experience in the new Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center. Trivium told the stories of Rock 'n' Roll and the landmark Surf Ballroom’s role in the history of American music. Large-scale wall projections, an interactive floor, and enveloping soundscapes transport guests through time and place.

Challenges

Our biggest challenge in producing the media for Not Fade Away was integrating multiple systems (software, hardware, and immersive media) into one seamless show, and also ensuring that every element served the story. Significant effort went into shaping and refining the narrative so that technology enhanced—rather than distracted visitors from—the powerful legacies at the heart of the experience.

Approach

We intentionally structured the experience as a multi-part story that fully leverages our technological capacity and the entire 3,000 sq ft available in the exhibit space. The journey begins with an immersive nine-minute film that introduces the history and cultural significance of the Surf Ballroom. The cinematic opening draws visitors in and through the Surf's early years, building up to an emotional climax: the tragic night when the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and Buddy Holly lost their lives after performing at the Surf’s annual Winter Dance Party.

From there, visitors are invited deeper into the story. A curved interactive wall transforms an otherwise passive watching experience into active discovery, allowing guests to explore 130 pieces of music, stories, and videos that define the Surf’s legacy.

By layering content thoughtfully, we ensured that every visitor—regardless of prior knowledge—can immerse themselves in this 40-minute guided experience and walk away with a meaningful appreciation for American rock-and-roll.

“We worked with folks that were incredible content matter experts and were deeply entrenched in the Surf Ballroom’s history. There were also folks that really wanted a world-class tourist experience. So when we were working with them, we balanced these two directives."

Outcomes and Impacts

It was deeply important to our client and the families involved that this project honor the stories and legacies of the featured musicians. We made it our goal from the start to deliver a true “wow” moment for visitors at the Surf Ballroom, while ensuring the content remained authentic, respectful, and impactful.

Through immersive technology and thoughtful storytelling, the final experience not only captivates audiences, but also preserves and elevates the legacies these icons left on the music industry.
