More Perfect Union: The American Civil War Era

Trivium collaborated with the Atlanta History Center to create interactive and immersive media for the More Perfect Union: The American Civil War Era exhibit in the DuBose Gallery.

Featured media in the gallery include Mapping the Slave Trade, which visualizes more than 30,000 slave voyages that crossed the Atlantic between 1514 and 1866, interactive key events that highlight various themes of the slave trade, and an interactive timeline that shows the expansion of slavery in the United States. Accompanying this interactive is At the Frontier & On the Brink, which is another deep dive interactive that presents the events and breaking news that set the stage for the Civil War. Visitors can browse newspaper headlines from the era covering topics such as westward expansion and the election of 1860. The last interactive is Barnard’s Photographic Views, which is a digital recreation of General William Tecumseh Sherman’s original copy. The program contains all 61 photographs, where visitors zoom in on each photo and explore the fine details in this early coffee table book.

Trivium also developed custom ambient audio programs for the gallery space. Featured is the recreation of Frederick Douglass’ famous speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Visitors can also stumble upon audio programs featuring Civil War Recruitment speeches, spoken excerpts of soldiers’ letters, and a historically accurate battlefield soundscape.
