As a central piece of NYSCI’s new CityWorks exhibition, Trivium developed a physiodigital interactive in which visitors use physical blocks that interface with digital software to build their own neighborhood. Users play the role of city planner, determining what buildings to include in their neighborhood, while they receive real-time feedback on how different each building block they place affects city metrics, such as the amount of waste, traffic, and flood risk. Visitors learn how these city systems are interrelated and impact each other in ways that affect the quality of life, health, and well-being of residents, as they see feedback messages from residents in their simulated city as they create it. To meet the challenge of creating an interactive table where objects need to be stackable instead of individually placed on a digital table alone, Trivium went through an intensive prototyping phase to determine the ideal technology to achieve object recognition within these stacks.
